Main fields of research are morphology, biology, ecology, ecophysiology, taxonomy and phylogenetics of toxigenic fungal species, mainly Aspergillus and Penicillium, and fungal species useful in the maturation of fermented products. He is also an expert in collection and conservation of filamentous fungal cultures, food mycology, microbiology, molecular biology, PCR methods, biological assays, genomics. Curator of the ITEM Microbial Collection of CNR-ISPA.
